Stars like Steve McQueen, Dennis Weaver and Clint Eastwood made for cool character actor cowboys and eventually made it to lead roles in movies, TV Westerns would have been nothing without character actors. The 1950s and 60s was a great time to be an actor in westerns. The boob tube was busy with them. There were 26 on the three major networks in 1959. A lot of roles to fill. There were many ve...

Ride the High Country and The Shootist have great endings, but also the end of "The West" Also note, when Tuco is screaming at Blondie after he shoots him off of the grave, he doesn't say HEY BLOND YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE? JUST A DIRTY SON OF A---watch the dubbing, he says JUST A DIRTY MOTHERFVCKER!. Also, Harmonica shoving the harmonica in Franks face as he's dying in Once Upon a Time in the West is up there too.

Vera Cruz is a personal favorite of mine as well. Here are a couple of others 1: Clint Walker in The Great Bank Robbery: Why? The bar scene where he killed 8 men 2:The Man Called Noon: Why? The showdown between Rosanna Schiaffano ( good) and Patty Shepard ( bad). Where else do you see two women have a duel. 3: The Quick Gun: Audie Murphy. Very underrated late Murphy film. 4: The Far Country: One of James Stewart’s least discussed westerns ( but it should be). Watch him go into town to go after John McIntire and his gang. The bell on the horse very effective scene

I will add some not so well known endings but brilliantly done. 1: Cowboy and the movie star. Sean Livingston ( Sean Young) “ Brennan ( Perry King) you have two choices: You can take me back to town or you can teach me to ranch.” Right before they kiss as the film ends. 2: The Dark Command: Cantrell ( Walter Pidgeon) gets shot dead by his mother ( Marjorie Main). 3: Drum Beat: The prison conversation between Johnny MacKay ( Alan Ladd) and “Captain Jack” ( Charles Bronson). Ladd survives but Bronson wins the conversation ( just like he dominated the film) 4 The Last Hunt: The scene of Charlie Gibson ( Robert Taylor) frozen to death. 5: Warlock: Clay Blaisdell (Henry Fonda) smiling as throwing his guns away and rides away . Giving an unexpected victory to a shocked Johnny Gannon ( Richard Widmark).

Thie Oklahoma Kid has my favorite ending to a movie (Western or not). Judge Hardwick ( Donald Crisp): “Do you take this woman?” Before Jim Kincaid ( James Cagney) could say anything his daughter Jane.( Rosemary Lane) says “He will take me whether he likes it or not!” Cagney gets the message smiles, takes off his huge hat and kisses her as the film ends.

I'm thinking of the ending to 'The Fastest Gun Alive'. After the showdown at the end, you're left thinking that George Temple and Vinnie Harold capped each other in the gunfight, there's two side by side graves of both of them. But then Temple appears with his wife Dora looking down at his grave, which was prepared by the town folk to give the illusion that he is deceased also, so no other gunslinger trying to prove who's fastest will never come looking for him again.

There are two things Hollywood often got (gets?) wrong in their portrayals of gunfights -- the 'jerk/thrust' of the gun in the direction of the shot, and fanning the gun. Both severely reduce accuracy, and IRL would quickly spell the doom of those who do that in favor of those who minimize movement in favor of deadly accuracy....

Those endings pack a punch! A few more candidates: 1. The Treasure of the Sierra Madre -- that image of the two prospectors, now bereft of their gold, laughing.... 2. Little Big Man -- Jack Crabb, now in an old folks home, lowering his head with sadness after recounting his life story, dismissing the historian who says, "I didn't know...." 3. Stagecoach -- after the Marshall and Doc surprisingly send Dallas and the Kid away to get married, the Marshall offers to buy alcoholic Doc a drink to celebrate. Doc says,' "Well, maybe just one...."

@@watchmakersp9935 There are a lot of those in Wayne's films, not necessarily involving Wayne's acting or even him directly. In Hatari, where they are wrestling the giraffe, notice Wayne's foot. He obviously just got it stomped on by the giraffe, but completes the scene normally. Another is in Rio Bravo. The time that you watch the scene where Colorado confronts the gambler, pay attention to Carlos the innkeeper in the background. He has his right hand under his jacket where you would find either a shoulder or cross draw holster. Little Carlos had teeth and was prepared to back his friend the sheriff.

Depictions of accurate shooting......but not many depictions of realistic shooting. Gus McCrae excepted. The 'Quigley Shot' is not possible. The rifle Quigley used was so heavy that an aluminum copy was made for Mr. Sellick to appear to fire from the shoulder. Mr. Sellick is no small or weak man either. All the 'fast draw and hip-shooting' are mostly Hollywood crap - not to say they don't make for good movies! And, of course, everyone toting a Colt Single Action Army - model of 1873 and not really available for commercial sale till the Army Contract had been filled a couple of years later. No way in Hell would any of the cowboys in 'Red River' have had one. But good movie!
